Children and adolescents with ADHD that were prescribed amphetamines (ie. Adderall etc.) were twice as likely to develop psychosis than those that were prescribed methylphenidate (ie. Ritalin etc.).

It is important to note the overall risks of developing were small but significant. Those children and adolescents with ADHD that were given amphetamines had a 20% increased risk of psychosis and those that were given methylphenidate had a 10% increased risk.

While the overall risk is low these drugs are prescribed to millions of children which could account for thousands of cases of psychosis.
