Moderate intensity exercise releases a lipid-controlling hormone (called lipokine) that causes skeletal muscle to take up fatty acids (in both mice and humans).

The release of the lipokine also correlated with an increased capacity for mitochondrial energy production in humans and improved VO2max. It also seems to decrease circulating triglycerides.
