A meta-analysis of over 30 studies conducted in China finds that people 50 years old and older are around 2.5x more likely to progress to a severe case of COVID-19, males had 1.3x higher risk, smoking increased risk 1-2x, and pre-existing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease increased risk by 2-3x.
Since these data were conducted in China, it remains to be determined if these risks are similar for people in other countries.
