Successful recovery from a viral infection in mice needed glucose whereas recovery from a bacterial infection required ketones, which are generated during fasting or from a ketogenic diet. In both infections, mortality appeared to result from neurological damage, resulting in seizures during bacterial infection and dysregulation of heart rate and body temperature in viral infection. If this differential metabolic requirement is conserved in humans it may have implications for the treatment of infections according to pathogen type.
