Adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus was significantly increased by aerobic exercise while resistance training had no effect on neurogenesis but did improve strength in rats. Since both cognitive decline and frailty (decrease in strength) occur with age it may be good to engage in both aerobic and strength training.
Is something known on the resistance training’s effect on BDNF? All-round it seems RT > HIT > aerobic, but I haven’t seen anything on BDNF…
Haven’t read the paper, but would love to know how do rats do resistance training? I imagine them lifting cute tiny barbells :)
There was no strong claim that this applies to humans. This was a rat study.
