Older people appear to have impaired mitochondria and energy production highlighting the importance of maintaining mitochondrial health in old age.

Skin cells from young and old people were reprogrammed into stem cells that form neurons. The mitochondria in the neurons produced from skin cells from old but not young people were dysfunctional.

Mitochondrial genes involved in energy production were not active and there were fewer mitochondria and they generated less energy.
