A small randomized, placebo-controlled trial shows a compound that targets mitochondria (called mitoQ) improved dilation of participants' arteries by 42% after 6 weeks, which made their blood vessels look 15 to 20 years younger.

MitoQ is not used in bioenergetics like CoQ10 is…but it does significantly reduce oxidative stress in mitochondria.

It is hard to know what the mechanism for improved arterial tone is but may be due to functional influences on smooth muscle tone, perhaps linked to reductions in oxidative stress.

This study’s authors have some conflict of interest, but the pilot study is interesting nonetheless.
