Mothers who frequently took acetaminophen (Tylenol) while pregnant were ~six times more likely to have a girl with language delays compared to mothers that took none. Frequently was defined as more than 6 times during pregnancy.

Interestingly, there was no effect on language skills on male babies. This study is also consistent with research that has shown a link between mothers who use acetaminophen in pregnancy and children with decreased IQs or increased rates of communication problems, and higher rates of ADHD in children.

The CDC estimates that 65% of pregnant women in the United States use acetaminophen while pregnant. While this study does not establish causality…this association seems to warrant future investigations on the effects of frequent use of acetaminophen during pregnancy.
