A preliminary study found that a modified Mediterranean-ketogenic diet resulted in changes in the gut microbiome and its metabolites that correlated with reduced levels of Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers (pilot randomized controlled trial).
The Mediterranean-ketogenic diet reduced Alzheimer’s biomarkers in people with mild cognitive impairment (often the first step to Alzheimer’s disease) as well as in healthy individuals. This was a pilot study. Much more work needs to be done.
