Human stem cells restore nerve function in a monkey model of Parkinson’s disease. The animals showed significant improvement in their symptoms two years after having precursor dopamine neurons derived from human stem cells transplanted into their brains. The human stem cells are called induced pluripotent stem cells because they are made from skin cells that are reprogrammed into stem cells that can form neurons. This makes them much easier to obtain.
