BPA replacements such as BPS, BPF, and BPAF were shown to have similar endocrine-disrupting effects on sperm and egg cells as BPA and these effects persisted in males for several generations, according to a new animal study.

The authors of this study first discovered that problems in sperm and egg cells were occurring in other controlled experiments they were performing. Once they traced it to the BPA replacements in the cages they decided to do controlled experiments with these chemicals including the commonly used replacement BPS. The researchers also state that it is difficult to determine how these levels compare to the levels of human exposure. In their controlled experiments they used low doses of BPS and other replacement bisphenols that they thought to be relevant to exposure in people using BPA-free plastics.
