More than half of the participants on the low-carb, high-fat diet had at least some ketones in their urine by six weeks into the diet until the end and this correlated with improved memory.

It is thought that people with Alzheimer’s disease have problems using glucose as energy in the brain. The ketones provide neurons with an alternative form of energy and is one possible mechanism by which the modified ketogenic diet may improve brain function in people with early Alzheimer’s disease.
