Curcumin in addition to standard treatment significantly improved depressive symptoms compared to placebo in a randomized controlled trial in patients with major depressive disorder.

Other open-label studies have found similar results but the placebo-control strengthens the data. A growing body of evidence indicates that inflammation may play a major role in mood disorders.

The dose of curcumin used was 500 mg per day at the start of the trial and was increased to 1500 mg per day by the end of the 12 weeks.
