Black carbon particles from air pollution were found on both the maternal and fetal side of the placenta. More carbon particles found in placentas from mothers that were exposed to higher doses of combustion-derived particulate matter.

The evidence of particulate matter crossing the placenta might be a plausible explanation for the observed detrimental effects found in associative studies linking air pollution to negative health outcomes.
